It was designed by Christopher Gadsden in 1775 as a symbol of defiance against British rule. The rattlesnake had been a popular symbol of American independence since the early 1750s, with Benjamin Franklin notably using it in his "Join, or Die" cartoon. The Gadsden Flag was used by the Continental Marines as an early motto flag and has since become a symbol of American patriotism, as well as a symbol used by various political movements and organizations. <br> - The six-pointed star associated with General George Washington is sometimes referred to as the "Washington star."
