This book contains Ahmed El Safi ‘A Bibliography of Biomedical Literature in Sudan in the 20th century’. The book describes how this bibliography is conceived, developed and maintained. The bibliography lists the citations of health sciences literature produced by Sudanese and expatriate doctors, pharmacists, biomedical scientists and scholars during the 20th century and beyond in all fields of medicine, health sciences and related applied and social sciences in all languages, whether conducted in Sudan or abroad. This bibliography includes the citations of the biomedical material that has been published (scientific articles, books and book chapters) and unpublished documents (post-graduate dissertations, technical reports, white papers, manuscripts, newsletters, departmental manuals, memoranda, project summaries, pamphlets, magazine articles), conference and workshop papers, abstracts and proceedings. There is no comprehensive biomedical bibliography in Sudan, even though the literature produced by Sudanese and expatriate biomedical scholars, particularly in the last century, is massive. This literature is scattered widely in local and international libraries, archives, and personal possession, hence inaccessible to researchers. This El-Safi bibliography is a compilation of this literature. We believe that we are not doing enough in the documentation field in Sudan. Although we say that health care providers, researchers, and students should be informed about this profession’s history and legacy, sources of information are few. In Sudan, the social history of medicine is not written or taught systematically in all health institutions. Moreover, the few medical schools that started courses in this field still lack authentic sources. Now, after so many generations, so much experience and enormous sacrifices, we are substantiating what the profession gained thus far and putting it on record. We are writing down the biographies of health pioneers and recording their scholarly achievements in biomedicine systematically. This work makes biological information available to researchers, information about the work already done. The material in this work is obtained from local and foreign sources, including published work on all platforms, the archives of the Postgraduate College, Sudan Medical Specialization Board, Sudan National Archives Centre, the National Centre for Research archives, the archives of the African and Asian Studies Institute, the libraries of medical, pharmacy and dentistry colleges, and the lists maintained by the Sudan Collections in University of Durham, Bergen and other foreign sources.
